Pixio robot camera follows you as you ride

Pixio is an “auto-follow camera” which can be set up in a fixed location and then pans around keeping you in frame while you ride. When used with suitable video cameras it can also be started and stopped using a watch on the rider’s wrist, and automatically zoom in and out to keep the horse and rider in frame.

The PIXIO system can be used indoors and out, and while it does require some setup (including positioning the camera and the locator beacons), it means riders’ can film the training or competitions smoothly and without the need for an extra helper. (For dressage riders, sorry but it won’t call your tests for you!).

The camera tracks a watch that is worn by the rider, or placed into a pocket. It can deal with some obstructions, and multiple riders being in the ring (only filming one at a time), and the rider can start and stop the recording using the watch. Not though, that start/stop from the watch only works with selected video cameras that have the ability to connect to the base unit.

PIXIO uses radio triangulation techniques to ensure it maintains accuracy, range and smoothness. Multiple cameras can be in action filming a single watch location at the same time, and the features can also be controlled via a smartphone app.

The PIXIO website sells bundles, ranging from the cheapest option of just the robot auto-follow unit, beacons and watch, up to full pacakges that include video cameras and range of other accessories.

It is possible to attach your own video camera, and specifications are provided to identify which cameras are suitable.  However, only certain models of camera have the capability to be used with the start/stop function from the watch, and the ability to auto zoom – basically the camera needs to have the right connection to be able to link into the PIXIO base unit.  The website provides full details of camera compatibility.

PIXIO claim that the base unit, beacons and watch have a battery life of between 2h30min and 3h30min, and it is possible to extend the battery life of the base robot unit and beacons with “power banks”.  Of course you’d need several watches to last the distance.

Pros
: Great way to film and review your riding without a helper on camera; ability to shoot multiple angles at the same time

Cons: Price; delivery from overseas; best functionality only works with selected video cameras
